Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Journal of Indigenous Islam (JINDIS)

1. Manuscript Types and Scope

JINDIS accepts original research articles, review essays, fieldwork-based reports, and conceptual papers that explore indigenous Islamic expressions, traditions, and epistemologies. We welcome interdisciplinary work grounded in anthropology, philology, theology, sociology, and decolonial studies.

2. Language and Length

  • Manuscripts must be written only in English, with an abstract in English.
  • Full-length articles should be 6,000–8,000 words, including footnotes and references.
  • Book reviews should be 1,200–1,800 words.

3. Structure of the Manuscript

Each manuscript must contain the following elements:

  • Title (clear and informative)
  • Abstract (150–250 words, in English)
  • Keywords (4–6 keywords)
  • Introduction, Methodology, Findings, Discussion, and Conclusion (or equivalent structure)
  • References (see Section 7)

4. Formatting Guidelines

  • Use Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) format.
  • Manuscripts should be typed in 11-point Calibri Light, 1.5 spacing, A4 size, with standard margins.
  • Use footnotes for supplementary remarks; avoid endnotes.
  • Abbreviations should be spelled out at first use and used consistently.

5. Referencing Style

We use APA 7th edition referencing style. Authors must ensure consistency in citation formatting. Examples:

  • In-text: (Bowen, 1993, p. 25)
  • Footnote: John R. Bowen, Muslims through Discourse: Religion and Ritual in Gayo Society (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1993), p. 25.
  • Bibliography: Bowen, J. R. (1993). Muslims through Discourse: Religion and Ritual in Gayo Society. Princeton: Princeton University Press.

6. Submission Procedure

  • Submit manuscripts via OJS to: https://jindis.org 
  • Include a short biography (max. 100 words) and institutional affiliation for each author.
  • Submissions must not be under review elsewhere or previously published.

7. Ethics and Plagiarism

  • All submissions are screened for plagiarism using Turnitin or equivalent tools.
  • Manuscripts with more than 15% similarity (excluding references) may be rejected.
  • Authors must follow the COPE Code of Conduct regarding originality and research ethics.

8. Review and Revision

  • All manuscripts undergo double-blind peer review by at least two reviewers.
  • The review process takes 6–12 weeks on average.
  • Authors are expected to revise according to reviewer comments within the given time.

9. Copyright and Licensing

  • Authors retain copyright under Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY 4.0) license.
  • No article processing charges (APC) are applied.
